Project Description

Fraunhofer is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Our research efforts are geared entirely to people’s needs: health, security, communication, energy and the environment. As a result, the work undertaken by their researchers and developers has a significant impact on people’s lives.

At present, Fraunhofer maintains 69 institutes and research units. The majority of nearly 24,500 staff is qualified scientists and engineers. The annual research budget was €2.1 billion in 2016. The fraction of €1.9 billion was generated through contract research. More than 70 percent of Fraunhofer’s contract research revenue is derived from contracts with industry and from publicly financed research projects. Almost 30 percent is contributed by the German federal and state governments in the form of base funding. Fraunhofer runs research centers and representative offices in Europe, North and South America and in Asia.

Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft IAP
The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP offers a complete range of polymer applications. We develop materials, processes and products that are tailored to meet the special requirements of our polymer applications. Our work focuses on synthetic polymers, as well as biopolymers and biobased plastics made from renewable raw materials. We develop processes from lab to production scale.

Role in NanoPack:

  • Leader activities related to development of treatment procedures and surface functionalization of HNTs
  • Development of formulation techniques for HNTs
  • Technology development for functionalisation
  • Support of HNT treatment and functionalisation scale-up
  • Compounding of HNTs with polymers
  • Masterbatch preparation
  • Small-scale film preparation
  • Characterisation of HNT’s, compounds, films

Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft IVV

The Fraunhofer-Institut für Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung IVV (Fraunhofer-Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging, IVV) in Freising, Germany, offers research and services in the development of high-quality food products and safe, effective, and convenient packaging. The Fraunhofer IVV is involved in the NanoPack Project with its experince in evaluating interactions between polymers and contact media such as packaged foods or other packaged products by systematically studying the transfer (migration/permeation) of chemical substances. Furthermore with the expertise in sensory assessment as well as in determination, understanding and prevention of food quality changes.

Role in NanoPack:

  • Carrying out conformity evaluations with food regulatory requirements
  • Performing migration testing of essential oils, other relevant components and nanomaterials
  • Non-targeted screening on non-intentionally added substances;
  • Quantification of essential oils in foods and sensory testing on odour and taste transfer
  • Determination of the antimicrobial efficacy of the developed functional materials by storage tests with the selected food products
  • Preparation of a dossier (non-toxicology part) for a food contact approval.
